The 2019 Gallup book “It’s the Manager” concluded that “…the quality of your managers and team leaders is the single biggest factor in your organisations success.” They also found that 80% of people who leave a business do so because of their manager. Not because of the organisation or their job – but because of their manager.
If you are a leader of an organisation (or a team) and that statistic doesn’t alarm you, it should, because it means you may be losing people for a reason that is within your control.
The fact that this statistic hasn’t changed much since then is concerning, as it means we still aren’t investing enough in the development of our leaders to encourage people to stay.
Being a leader is hard – being self-aware enough to recognise the impact of our actions on our teams takes courage and intentional action. If only leaders had a trusted guide to talk to!
